The Japanese vowels can be short or long.
Long vowels are pronounced by doubling the length of short vowels.
A double vowel (e.g., ああ) has twice the length of a regular vowel (e.g., あ). The double length is indicated by adding one of the vowel characters (あ, い, う, え, or お) after another hiragana. If the first vowel of double vowels is /e/ or /o/, a hiragana character い or う is often used to represent the second vowel respectively.
