Similar but Different (Hiragana)

If you are not careful, some hiragana characters may become indistinguishable from another hiragana character.

a and o

Hiragana and may become confusing

  • if there is an extra short stroketen2 in
    OR
  • if the second stroke of is separated into two strokes and .
i and ri

Hiragana and may become indistinguishable

  • if the second stroke of is too long
    OR
  • if the second stroke of is too short.
u and ra

Hiragana and may become indistinguishable

  • if the second stroke ofis too emphatic at the beginning
    OR
  • the beinning part of the second stroke of is short and not vertical.
su and o

Hiragana and may become indistinguishable

  • if the loop of the second stroke ofis too wide to the right
    OR
  • if the ending loop of the second stroke of is too tight
    and dragged down (with the third stroketen2, it may look like
    )

 

o and mu

Hiragana and may become indistinguishable

  • if the ending loop of the second stroke ofis deformed
    OR
  • if the ending of the second stroke of is deformed
wa and re

Hiragana and may become indistinguishable

  • if the ending loop of the second stroke ofis not curved left
    OR
  • if the ending of the second stroke of is not curved right

nu, me, etc.

If the ending of the last stroke of these characters has a too much/little curl,
each character may be confused for another.

chi and sa

Hiragana is NOT a mirror image of hiragana strictly speaking,
but they may look like the other

  • if the second stroke ofis separated into two strokes,
    OR
  • if is flipped horizontally. (If is written in a different font (),
    the similarity between flipped and is more striking.)

 

ma and ho

Hiragana may look like hiragana , or or the other way around

  • if there is an extra vertical stroke in
    OR
  • if the last stroke in crosses the horizontal stroke ().
yo and ma

Hiragana may look like hiragana , or or the other way around

  • if the short horizontal stroke () is crossed by the second stroke in
    OR
  • if one of the horizontal strokes in is missing.
ho and ha

Hiragana may become hiragana , or the other way around

  • if the second stroke is missing from
    OR
  • if there is an extra horizontal stroke in .
ki and sa

Hiragana may become hiragana , or the other way around

  • if the one of the horizontal strokes is missing from
