Japanese Banking System

Ms. Tanaka is talking with Mr. Yoshida.

Japanese banks typically offer savings account to individual customers. Checking accounts are used primarily by businesses. As a result, writing checks is not a common practice in Japan. Utility bills are typically paid by automatic deductions from their bank account.

Frequently, small shops and restaurants do not accept credit cards. When people shop, they usually carry a large sum of cash or use debit cards or prepaid cards rather than credit cards. Traveler's checks are almost unheard of in Japan.
