When you open a new bank account, Japanese banks typically
issue a passbook (in addition to ATM cards) in which all bank
transactions will be recorded. ATMs located at the banks can
print transactions directly onto the passbook. What is recorded
on the passbook represents the official bank statement of
your account.
When you create your account, you also register your own
signature seal called いんかん (or はんこ). When withdrawing money
using the passbook, it is necessary to use いんかん. (The image
of your name engraved into the seal represents your signature.)
