| Japanese has rich onomatopoeias.
スイスイ ("swiftly/with ease") is one of them. Some
imitate sounds and others represent abstract concepts. Most
can be followed by a quotation marker と. (と is likely to be
deleted after four-syllable, repeated onomatopoeias.)
- いぬがワンワンなく: The dog goes bow-wow.
- ねこがニャーニャーなく: The cat miaows.
- 雨がザーザー(と)ふる: It rains heavily.
- ドアをドンドン(と)たたく: to bang on the door
- パクパク(と)食べる: to munch
- スラスラ(と)書く: to write deftly and quickly
- 英語がペラペラだ: someone's English is fluent
- フワフワのふとん: airy-soft huton
- キラキラ(と)明るい: something is bright and shiny
- あたまがガンガンいたい: I have a throbbing headache.
- ガクッと来る: something hits you suddenly resulting in
momentary loss of strength
