Kanji Input 1

Before Entering Kanji Input

If you can see Japanese but cannot input in Japanese, you need to insall the Japanese Language Input Method. If you have correctly installed the input method, the following will start to work.

First, click within the field to type in to place your blinking cursor inside there and switch to the Japanese-input mode as follows.

1. Selecting the input mode.
Windows	Hold down and hit Left . This will switch between the Japanese-input mode () and the English-input mode (). If the input mode is not ひらがな (), switch to it by -. (The initial input mode is the direct mode (). Practically, the English-input mode () and the direct mode () are the same.)
Mac	Hold down and hit . This will switch between the Japanese-input mode () and the English-input mode ().
2. Enter romaji. (Similar for both Windows and Mac.)

The Japanese-input mode defaults to "romaji-input." That is, a romaji sequence like "hiragana" initially turns into ひらがな on the screen.

Type your name in katakana (foreign names are written in katakana), first type the romaji "sumisu" which turns into すみす initially. To keep it as is, hit or .
To convert すみす to katakana (スミス), on Windows, try F7 or -. On Mac, try F7 or - or -.
If the word is correctly spelled and known (i.e., in the system dictionary), you can hit . to get katakana. (Caution: This might also change ひらがな to other homonyms such as those in kanji.)
Hit the or to make the conversion permanent.

To get a small character っ or ッ, type double consonants. Alternatively, if you type a letter "x" in front of a vowel (aiueo) or tu/ya/yu/yo, you can get small characters ぁぃぅぇぉ・ァィゥェォ／っゃゅょ・ッャュョ.
To get a double vowel in カタカナ words, instead of typing vowels twice, type a hyphen ("-").
To get double vowels in ひらがな, type vowels twice (e.g., /aa/, /ii/, /uu/, /ei/ee/, /ou/oo/) rather than typing a hyphen.
A comma generates a Japanese comma (、), and a period generates a Japanese period (。).
Do not type a space anywhere in the middle of the Japanese-input mode. (A spacebar is reserved for converting ひらがな into kanji. We will learn kanji in Elementary Japanese II.) To enter a space in Japanese, no romaji should immediately precede it.
