Typing Kanji using the English Keyboard

The following will generate Kanji.

  1. During the Japanese input mode (Japanese-input mode icon for Windows), you enter text in romaji and generate ひらがな sequence.
  2. You hit Spacebar. to convert ひらがな into kanji. If there are multiple kanji conversion possibilities, you hit Spacebar again to see the list of all other conversion possibilities.
  3. Select (Or, enter the number of) the kanji you want.
  4. Hit the Enter Key or Return Key to make the conversion permanent.

Unless the initial ひらがな input is grammatically correct (and complete), the computer is more likely to generate wrong kanji. There are many issues.

  • There are so many different words and phrases that have the same initial ひらがな sequences. (Homonym issues)
  • The word segmentation generated by the computer is not always the segmentation you want.If the segmentation is wrong, shift the segment to the left (Shift Key ←) or to the right (Shift Key →),
