The highly competitive Japanese
education system is creating a skewed attitude among parents
who put too much emphasis on "getting good education"
early in children's life. Just for fun, search for the word
教育ママ on the Web. You will find numerous sites discussing cases
like a typical "Education Mama" who is pushing her
four-year old son very hard to pass an entrance exam to a
prestigious kindergarten in order to receive special education
for gifted children. Attending a good kindergarten will enable
children to advance to a good elementary school and then on
to a good middle school, high school, and on to a good university.
Ultimately, the goal is to be hired by an industry-leading
private business or by a top government office.
Cultural project: Compare and contrast 教育ママ and a Jewish
Mother.
