Earlier, we learned quotation expressions that use the quotation marker と. The rules to quote someone's statement are as follows:

• A quoted sentence is in the plain form (e.g., 行きます → 行く).
• The tense of the quoted sentence is not affected by the overall tense of the sentence.

	田中さんは、「あした行きます」と言いました。	Mr. Tanaka said "I am going tomorrow!"
	田中さんは、あした行くと言いました。	Mr. Tanaka said that he was going tomorrow.

If the quoted expression is a question, the quotation marker と can be dropped, and an additional structure かどうか ("whetehr or not") is inserted.

	田中さんは、「あした行きますか」と聞きました。	Mr. Tanaka asked "Are you going tomorrow?"
	田中さんは、あした行くかどうか（と）聞きました。	Mr. Tanaka asked whether or not I was going tomorrow.

More examples:

• 東京(とうきょう)大学はむずかしいから、入れるかどうかわかりません。
• パスワードは sakura1 だったかどうかわすれました。
• 私の作った料理はおいしいかどうか食べてみて下さい。

Note 1: Sかどうか is a plain form of two alternate questions.

＝	行きましたか。どうですか。		行ったか。どうか。

Note 2: Plain-form questions used as stand-alone questions (e.g., 行くか？) are extremely rude and their usage is limited to people in close relationships (e.g., father to children; husband to wife, senior to junior, etc.).

Besides referring to a purpose, the word ため can be used to refer to a reason. This usage of ため is similar to から or ので.

	たいふうが来る たいふうが来た	ため（に）	風が強くなるでしょう。	Because a typhoon is coming, the wind will get stronger. Because a typhoon has arrived, the wind will get stronger.
	たいふうが来る たいふうが来た	から ので	風が強くなるでしょう。

If a noun precedes it, の is required. Nouns cannot precede から or ので as noted by below.

	たいふう	の	ため（に）	風が強くなるでしょう。	Because of a typhoon, the wind will get stronger.
	たいふう	の	から ので	風が強くなるでしょう。	[ungrammatical]
	たいふう	だ	から	風が強くなるでしょう。	Because of a typhoon, the wind will get stronger.
	たいふう	な	ので	風が強くなるでしょう。

Review: To use から or ので with a noun, the copula だ (which changes to な in front of ので) is used.
